About The Lower Merion Ice Hockey Club

The Lower Merion Ice Hockey Club was established in 1971. The club’s first uniforms were donated by the legendary and iconic NHL hall of famer, Ed Snider, the late founder of the Philadelphia Flyers. Two of Mr. Snider's sons, Craig and Jay Snider, played on that first team. The hockey club has continued to grow and flourish since then into teams ranging from mite all the way through girls and boys high school teams with multiple trips to the Flyers Cup and multiple league championships for our teams.

The Philosophy of the Lower Merion Ice Hockey Club is to provide a nurturing environment where our young athletes can mature as individuals and hockey players and our older students can further develop their skills not only as hockey players, but as leaders, teammates, and friends. Hockey is a wonderful medium to learn how to win and lose respectfully and with your head held high. It is a place to forge lifelong friendships, build work ethic and discipline and take pride in doing something difficult well, regardless of ability. See you at the rink!

The Lower Merion Ice Hockey Club is open to any resident of Lower Merion Township or Narberth Borough and consists of teams at the Mite, Elementary, Middle School and High School Levels. Registration for teams typically opens in January and runs through August depending on how quickly rosters fill up.

Mites & Elementary Bulldogs

Our Mites team is typically comprised of girls’ and boys’ grades K-2 (or beginners ages 8 and under) while our Elementary teams are generally open to girls and boys in grades 2-4 depending on ice skating and hockey experience. Our Mites team season runs from October through March and they play in the Delco Dragons Mite league out of Ice Works in Aston, PA. Games are 4 vs. 4 half-ice and typically on Saturday or Sunday.

Our Elementary School teams also play out at Ice Works in the Delco School Hockey League (DSHL) which is comprised teams such as Haverford, Springfield, Ridley, Radnor, Penn crest, Marple Newtown and Garnet Valley. Our Elementary teams play a 16-game schedule plus playoffs from November through April. Most games are scheduled on Sunday late afternoon/early evenings. The Mite and Elementary teams practice at Springfield Ice Rink on Saturday’s late afternoon.

Middle School Bulldogs

Our Middle School Bulldog teams are competitive in their respective divisions in the Iceline (West Chester, PA) Middle School League with the Varsity winning the championship in 2021 and the Junior Varsity reaching the title game the same year. Both Middle School teams play in no-check divisions against teams from across Montgomery, Delaware and Chester Counties and Philadelphia. Most games are scheduled for Sunday late afternoon/early evenings. The Middle School Junior Varity is a developmental team that practices late afternoon on Saturdays at Springfield Ice Rink while the Varsity is a games-only team.

High School Teams

The Club introduced a new Junior Varsity High School team in 2021 to give more Lower Merion and Harriton High School students an opportunity to play ice hockey. The Club also re-branded our Girls Varsity team the “Liberty.” All of the High School teams compete in the Inter County Scholastic Hockey League (ICSHL) and play or practice at various rinks in the area including the Skatium, UPenn Class of 23 Arena, PNY, IceWorks, IceLine and Patriot Ice.
